Cardano News - Hoskinson Sets Midnight City Beta Path for AI Agents, Private DeFi and Multi-Chain Identity

Charles Hoskinson used a Surprise AMA to give a product and infrastructure update on Midnight, Cardano’s partner chain for privacy-preserving applications, selective disclosure and multi-chain activity. The update placed Midnight City, AI agents, identity, private DeFi and Cardano settlement inside one development path rather than treating privacy as a standalone feature.

Midnight City Moves Into Beta Onboarding

Hoskinson described Midnight City as moving toward beta, with users expected to be introduced in waves. Midnight City is an application environment built around AI agents, digital identity and user interaction inside a simulated world connected to the Midnight ecosystem.

The project is not structured like a standard wallet interface or a single-purpose decentralized application. Users interact with agents that can develop context, reputation and behavior over time, while the underlying infrastructure connects those experiences to Midnight’s privacy and identity tools.

Hoskinson referenced two product metrics being tracked by the team, watchability and empathy. Watchability measures whether the environment is compelling to observe, while empathy measures the user’s connection with the agent and the broader experience.

That gives Midnight City a clearer product role inside the Cardano ecosystem. It is being positioned as a user-facing environment where AI agents, persistent identity and privacy-enabled blockchain services can be tested together, instead of remaining separate technical components.

Midnight Passport Links Agents and Wallets

The AMA also included an update on agentic trading, where Midnight City is being connected with other parts of the Midnight stack. Hoskinson described work involving Midnight Passport, multi-chain signatures and intents.

Midnight Passport is being developed as an identity layer that can represent multiple wallets through a simpler user identity. One identity could connect a Cardano wallet, an Ethereum wallet and a Midnight wallet, reducing the visible complexity normally required to move across chains and applications.

For users, that means privacy can become part of the transaction flow rather than a separate technical process. Hoskinson described a model where users can select privacy features for specific interactions while keeping the option to disclose information for audit, tax or compliance requirements.

In that structure, $NIGHT sits inside a broader system where DUST is used as the resource for activity on Midnight. Hoskinson also linked capacity exchange demand to multi-chain signatures and additional crypto assets entering the Midnight environment.

Private DeFi Model Uses Cardano for Settlement

Hoskinson also described how Midnight can support private financial activity without hiding transactions directly on Cardano. In the model he outlined, Cardano acts as the settlement layer, while private lending and value movement occur through Midnight.

One example involved Cardano-based value being locked in a smart contract, followed by a private stablecoin lending transaction on Midnight. That stablecoin could then be routed toward yield products in other ecosystems through multi-chain signatures and intents.

The model places Midnight as a privacy and coordination layer for financial applications that interact with Cardano and external blockchain networks. Parts of the financial flow can remain shielded, while selective disclosure remains available when users or institutions need to prove information to approved parties.

Hoskinson also referenced UmbraDB, a persistent storage component for Midnight pre-production infrastructure. The system was described in connection with node data, indexers, wallet sync, recovery processes, shielded transactions and governance data.

The update places $NIGHT inside a larger product stack built around AI agents, identity, private DeFi and cross-chain execution. For Cardano, the sharper point is that Midnight is being developed not only as privacy infrastructure, but as a layer for applications where users, agents, wallets and compliance requirements operate through the same interface.
