Midnight News - ShadowLabz Brings Private Voting to Midnight Mainnet at TOKEN2049

ShadowLabz brought private blockchain voting into a live conference setting at TOKEN2049 in Singapore, where attendees were invited to scan QR codes and cast ballots on Midnight mainnet. Midnight highlighted the demonstration in an October 26 ecosystem spotlight, showcasing how its zero-knowledge technology can support confidential decisions without concealing the final outcome.

The presentation marked a progression from the project's earlier Preprod implementation to a public mainnet demonstration.

ShadowLabz Demonstrates Live Voting at TOKEN2049

Developed through the first cohort of Midnight Build Club, ShadowLabz began as an effort to address privacy concerns in decentralized autonomous organizations.

During Midnight's Privacy Pitched event, organizers integrated the platform directly into the presentations. Audience members were encouraged to scan QR codes and privately vote as different teams took the stage.

Tom Humber, representing Build Club, explained that the developers had worked intensively to prepare their mainnet deployment for the event.

Jay Albert, involved in Midnight's developer education and solutions engineering, described how the project progressed from an initial concept to a functioning application.

The demonstration gave attendees an opportunity to interact with the voting system rather than simply watch a technical presentation.

Midnight's ecosystem spotlight included footage from the Singapore event and a separate walkthrough of the Shadow DAOs platform.

Midnight Zero-Knowledge Proofs Protect Individual Ballots

ShadowLabz addresses a persistent challenge in blockchain governance: public transparency can expose how individual participants vote, potentially creating pressure within communities.

Its approach separates ballot confidentiality from the verification of voting outcomes.

According to the project, Midnight zero-knowledge proofs protect individual voting choices while allowing results to be publicly verified.

This enables a model resembling traditional secret ballots, where participants can express their preferences without publicly associating their identities with specific decisions.

The Shadow DAOs platform extends beyond conference polls. It supports decentralized organization creation, membership management, proposals, voting, and treasury governance.

Its documentation describes wallet connectivity through Midnight, Cardano, and XRP Ledger services, including Lace, CIP-30-compatible Cardano wallets, and Xaman.

These connections provide access for communities across multiple ecosystems. They do not establish that private voting transactions execute independently on every supported blockchain.

From Cardano Communities to Practical DAO Governance

ShadowLabz's development already extends beyond Midnight's immediate developer community.

During the TOKEN2049 presentation, Albert referenced testing involving the Cardano HOSKY community and engagement with participants from the XRP ecosystem.

The team's broader objective is to make confidential governance accessible to organizations that need verifiable decisions without exposing individual voting preferences.

Potential applications include DAO treasury decisions, community funding proposals, membership elections, and organizational governance.

However, the conference demonstration does not independently establish widespread production adoption or confirm that the implementation has undergone an external security audit. Publicly verifiable mainnet contract details were also not established in the materials reviewed.

There is another distinction between confidential voting and secure elections.

ShadowLabz's public poll interface explicitly warns that open polls have no Sybil resistance, meaning an individual may be able to vote more than once. The project recommends this format only for low-stakes audience participation.

For formal DAO governance, Shadow DAOs provides wallet-based membership controls, proposal rules, and quorum requirements. Those mechanisms address different requirements from ballot confidentiality and must be evaluated separately.

The TOKEN2049 demonstration establishes a concrete use of Midnight-based private voting in a live audience setting. Organizations considering the platform for binding governance decisions must distinguish that demonstrated capability from independently verified eligibility controls, election security, and production reliability.
