Cardano News - TrustLevel Don Launch ZK Voting App for Cardano Mainnet

TrustLevel’s ZK Voting App don go live for Cardano mainnet and the Preprod test network. The open-source application allow organizers create votes for invited groups, with ballots wey dem verify and count on-chain.

Voters go receive invitation link and dem no need to sign transaction or pay network fee. The organizer go set up the event and cover the costs to publish am and to submit votes.

How ZK Voting Works on Cardano

Organizer go choose the network, voting options, voting method and time window, then invite participants by email. Each invitation get private link, and participants must register before dem publish the event.

During registration, the voter browser go generate secret cryptographic identity. Public commitment wey dem derive from that identity go add to the group, while the secret remain with the participant.

When person wan cast vote, the browser go generate zero-knowledge proof say the voter belong to the registered group without identify the member. One-time marker, wey dem dey call nullifier, go stop the same identity from voting two times.

TrustLevel service go submit the vote transaction using im own wallet. The application support single-choice vote and weighted option wey allow participants distribute fixed number of points across choices.

Wetín the Voting App Keep Private

The application dey use one version of Semaphore, protocol for anonymous group signaling, wey dem adapt for Cardano. Smart contracts dey verify the proofs, record the votes and update the on-chain tally.

The proof dey hide which registered member submit ballot, but the selected option still dey visible for Cardano. The application no dey show interim results while voting still open; anybody wey check the blockchain fit still follow the tally.

TrustLevel still point one limitation for the hosted service. The backend dey receive one request wey relate to the voter before e receive the vote, so operator wey dey log the two requests fit correlate the participant with ballot. The project list alternative ways to handle those requests as potential mitigations.

Mainnet Costs and Open-Source Availability

According to TrustLevel, to publish event for mainnet require approximately 15 ADA wey dem go lock inside the event contracts and around 1.5 ADA for fees. Organizers still dey prepay 1.3 ADA per registered voter for vote transactions. Any unused portion of that payment no dey refunded.

Preprod use free. Once dem publish event, im options, dates and registered group membership no fit change. Participants wey never register by that time no go fit vote.

The project receive funding through Project Catalyst Fund 12. Im code dey available under the Apache 2.0 license, wey allow organizations run their own instance of the application.
