Midnight News - Varavas Highlights Cardano and Midnight Security After Binance Hack

Cardano community member Varavas has outlined how transaction authorization and privacy technology could protect digital assets in a post about the Binance hack.

Writing on October 30, Varavas claimed that no ADA or NIGHT was stolen during the incident. He attributed the outcome to a combination of Cardano script conditions and Midnight’s zero-knowledge technology.

Varavas Describes Cardano Wallet Safeguards

Varavas described a multisignature arrangement in which spending the assets required authorization from a separate key kept offline. In his account, the key was controlled by another team, while a time lock introduced a delay before funds could be released.

He also claimed that Midnight’s privacy layer protected amounts and destination addresses, creating an additional obstacle to withdrawals. According to his post, an internal response team rotated the remaining signing keys and froze the script.

His account brought together several aspects of asset security, including the conditions attached to a transaction, the management of signing keys and the systems used to process withdrawals. Binance has not disclosed the specific ADA and NIGHT wallet configuration described in the post.

Cardano Scripts and Midnight Privacy

Cardano scripts can set conditions that must be met before assets are spent. A multisignature arrangement can require authorization from more than one key, while time conditions can restrict when a transaction is valid.

The rules depend on how an individual script is configured. An exchange can also apply internal controls to its withdrawal and signing systems before a transaction reaches the blockchain.

Midnight uses zero-knowledge technology to support applications that can verify information while protecting selected details. Its network supports both shielded and unshielded token designs.

Varavas connected Midnight’s privacy layer with the protection of amounts and destination addresses. Midnight’s documentation distinguishes those capabilities from NIGHT itself, which is an unshielded token. Its balances and transfers are public, while shielded tokens and private application data are separate features of the network.

Binance Investigation and Asset Recovery

Binance reported that its hot wallets were compromised on October 29, resulting in approximately $6.3 billion in losses. Its initial investigation pointed to a potentially compromised laptop, while a later update reported additional points of breach.

The exchange stated that it had found no evidence of a wallet private key leak at that stage of the investigation. It also reported revoking affected authorizations and working with partners to trace and freeze stolen assets.

On October 31, Binance reported that approximately 90% of the affected assets had been replenished. The exchange also published a new proof of reserves snapshot and stated that it would cover the financial impact of the incident.
