PolyCrypt Show Bitcoin Lightning Swaps for Cardano Preprod
The Catalyst-funded prototype enables two-way swaps between Bitcoin Lightning payments and tokenized bitcoin on Cardano, but production liquidity and decentralized relay operation are not yet available.

PolyCrypt don show working Cardano Preprod system wey connect Bitcoin Lightning payments with Cardano-based assets.
Principal Software Engineer Ilja von Hoessle present the architecture during Cardano Developers Office Hours session wey dem record on August 14 and publish on August 24. The prototype combine modified Lightning Development Kit node, Rust relay, Plutus V3 smart contract and browser interface.
Lightning Payments Connect With Cardano Liquidity
PolyCrypt’s Cardano Lightning Relay dey support swaps for both directions between the Bitcoin Lightning Network and tokenized bitcoin for Cardano.
For incoming swap, user go choose amount and provide Cardano address. The relay go reserve the corresponding Cardano-side cBTC liquidity and generate BOLT11 Lightning invoice. Once dem pay the invoice through Lightning wallet, the smart contract go release cBTC to the specified address.
The reverse process dey start with Lightning invoice wey user supply. After the user transfer cBTC through the Cardano contract, the relay go validate the transaction and pay the invoice for the Lightning Network.
Both flows get timeout and refund mechanisms wey dem design to prevent assets from remain locked when swap no fit complete.
The current Preprod deployment dey use custom test version of cBTC instead of bitcoin-backed production liquidity. PolyCrypt never announce Cardano mainnet launch date.
The relay and browser application dey publicly available for GitHub.
Catalyst Funded Four Development Milestones
PolyCrypt develop the prototype through the Project Catalyst Fund 14 proposal “Bitcoin Lightning Payments on Cardano using Cardinal.”
The project receive 100,000 ADA across four milestones wey cover the Liquidity Manager, the Lightning-to-Cardano connector, Cardinal integration and end-to-end testnet deployment. Catalyst records list the four milestones as completed and the full allocation as distributed.
Cardinal dey designed to support bitcoin-backed assets for Cardano through federated custody model. Even though im integration be part of the funded development, the demonstrated Preprod flow currently dey operate with test asset.
The presentation therefore provide technical walkthrough of work wey dem don complete, instead of announce new mainnet product.
PolyCrypt na German applied cryptography company wey originate from the Technical University of Darmstadt. Dem work cover blockchain interoperability, payment channels and cryptographic protocols.
Relay Security Remains a Mainnet Requirement
The current architecture depend on relay wey PolyCrypt dey operate. The relay get signing authority, coordinate both sides of each swap and dey communicate with the Lightning node and Cardano smart contract.
Von Hoessle acknowledge say if relay compromise or malicious, e go present security risk. One possible future improvement na to distribute signing authority among independent operators through threshold signatures, like to require two of three relays to approve transaction.
The implementation still face Cardano concurrency constraint. Multiple swaps fit try update the same Liquidity Manager state at the same time, and that one fit create contention around im UTxO. PolyCrypt dey consider sequencing or batching mechanisms to process concurrent requests more efficiently.
Production service go still need securely backed bitcoin liquidity, mechanism to balance funds between Cardano and Lightning, and defined incentives for liquidity providers and relay operators. Automated market maker na one option wey dem dey consider but e no be part of the current prototype.
PolyCrypt don deliver testable bidirectional payment flow for Preprod.
To move am go production go require distributed relay authority, reliable handling of simultaneous swaps and verifiably backed bitcoin liquidity.
