Midnight Roadmap Outlines Move to BABE Consensus and Bank Deposit Tokens
The migration to the new consensus system is set to begin in stages in the fourth quarter of 2026, with mainnet activation planned for the first quarter of 2027, when NIGHT holders are expected to be able to delegate tokens to stake pools.

Midnight published a technical roadmap on October 13 that organizes the network's development into seven areas, ranging from institutional asset issuance to the decentralization of block production. The document covers the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027, without exact dates within each quarter. Two items tie it directly to Cardano: opening block production to Cardano stake pool operators and work on programmable privacy for UTXO chains, including Cardano.
Midnight Roadmap for Q4 2026: Deposit Tokens, Enterprise Keys and Private Lending
Midnight is a blockchain focused on programmable privacy, using zero-knowledge proofs to support applications in which data can be proven without being publicly disclosed. Shielded Technologies develops the network, and the Midnight Foundation leads adoption. Mainnet launched in March 2026 under a federated node model, and since September developers have been able to deploy smart contracts written in the Compact language without a prior security review. The network's economy rests on NIGHT, a utility token issued as a Cardano native asset, and DUST, a shielded resource used to pay for transaction execution.
According to the plan, Midnight is preparing audited contract templates for the fourth quarter that a bank can use to issue deposit tokens, redeem them for cash and control how they move. They are accompanied by shielded contract tokens with hidden balances and transfers, where each transfer carries a zero-knowledge proof that the rules were followed.
Contracts are also expected to verify signatures made with the ed25519 and ECDSA P-256 standards, which are already used by hardware security modules (HSMs), the dedicated devices in which banks store cryptographic keys, as well as by passkeys and secure chips. According to the roadmap, this would allow an institution to authorize transactions on Midnight using the key management systems its security team has already vetted, instead of adopting new ones.
The confidential DeFi section of the document builds on those assets, which are meant to be lent, traded and posted as collateral. For the fourth quarter, Midnight announced a lending market in which users' positions and collateral remain confidential, so that liquidation prices are not visible to other participants, along with private swaps whose details stay hidden until execution, a design intended to prevent bots from trading ahead of orders.
BABE Consensus and Cardano Stake Pool Operators
In the fourth quarter, Midnight begins a phased migration from its current Aura consensus to BABE, the system that determines who produces each block.
According to Midnight's documentation on GitHub, changing the consensus algorithm requires a coordinated hard fork rather than a routine runtime upgrade. The plan therefore separates the staged rollout in the fourth quarter from the start of mainnet activation in the first quarter of 2027.
Alongside the migration, block producers are expected to start earning rewards in the network's token by the end of the year, together with tools for forecasting rewards, monitoring performance and withdrawing earnings. For the first quarter of 2027, the document schedules the opening of block production to Cardano stake pool operators, which Midnight describes as a way to bring a large group of experienced independent operators onto the network and reduce reliance on any single party.
The connection to Cardano also extends to the smart contract layer. Under the Starstream project, Midnight plans to finalize in the fourth quarter an execution model for programmable privacy on UTXO chains such as Bitcoin and Cardano, validating it against a simulated ledger before integration with live networks.
Viewing Keys, Key Custody and Staking in Q1 2027
Viewing keys, which grant read-only access, are expected to let institutions open specific private records to an auditor or regulator in the first quarter of 2027, with an expiry date and the option to revoke access at any time.
Programmable shielded assets are set to gain compliance controls enforced by the ledger itself in the same period, including freezing a holding, forcing a transfer when ordered by a court or regulator, and restricting who is eligible to hold a token.
The changes also reach key custody. According to Midnight, creating a private transaction today requires handing the spending key to the software that generates the zero-knowledge proof. A new design called VRF nullifiers is meant to keep the key inside the custodian's secure environment, whether an HSM or a multi-party computation (MPC) system, in which the key is split into shares held by different parties so that no one holds it in full. Midnight said this is what most institutional custody policies require.
The plan also covers the issuance of tokenized real-world assets, starting with investment funds, credit products and property. An accompanying RWA token standard is intended to let wallets and custodians support every issuer through a single integration.
In the first quarter, holders are expected to be able to delegate the network's token to a stake pool and earn rewards without running their own servers. The document does not specify reward levels or a minimum delegation amount.
Alongside staking, Midnight announced work to reduce zero-knowledge proof generation times and increase network throughput, committing to report progress against published benchmarks based on real-world usage.
