Midnight will soon enable smart contract deployment on mainnet, according to Midnight Foundation CTO Sebastien Guillemot. The planned release covers contracts using private state and the ability to mint private custom tokens. An activation date and public access rules have not been announced.

Midnight Mainnet Prepares for Contract Deployment

Guillemot said smart contract deployment would soon be enabled on Midnight's production network. Midnight's official account amplified the announcement.

Developers are expected to be able to deploy contracts that use private state and create custom tokens whose privacy rules are built into the application. These contracts and assets would operate on Midnight rather than introducing native private smart contracts directly on Cardano mainnet.

Testnet already carries the next contract version with events and composability. Events allow applications and supporting tools to follow changes published by a contract, while composability allows multiple contract components to interact within a broader application. Midnight has not confirmed whether both features will arrive with the initial public mainnet release.

Private Contracts Expand Midnight's Application Layer

Midnight is a Cardano partner chain designed for programmable data protection and selective disclosure. Developers use Compact, its smart contract language, to build applications that combine publicly verifiable outcomes with private data and zero-knowledge proofs.

This model allows an application to confirm that a condition has been satisfied without publishing all of the information used in the verification. Users can disclose only the data required by another party while keeping the remaining information protected.

Mainnet deployment would provide a production environment for applications using programmable privacy. Developers could define the issuance, use and disclosure rules for private custom tokens inside the same application logic rather than exposing every asset interaction through a fully public state.

The change would move Midnight beyond its initial wallet and asset layer by allowing developers to publish privacy-preserving applications on the live network. Cardano remains connected through the partner chain architecture and assets held on Cardano, while the contracts themselves execute on Midnight.

Gero Connects Cardano Assets to Midnight Fees

Alongside the contract preparations, Gero 2.7.1 simplifies access to the resource required for Midnight transactions. Midnight uses NIGHT to generate DUST, a non-transferable resource that covers network activity.

Gero allows eligible assets to be registered for resource generation directly from the wallet. It also supports cNIGHT that remains on Cardano without requiring a separate bridge, while shielded balance views are available for mainnet and preproduction environments. The wallet therefore handles part of the registration and fee process that users would otherwise manage separately.

The Cardano connection is functional rather than only architectural: eligible assets can remain on Cardano while supporting activity on Midnight, and the private contract remains on the partner chain.

Midnight has not published the final deployment tooling or confirmed which testnet features will accompany the release. Once contract deployment is enabled, developers will be able to publish privacy-preserving applications and custom assets on Midnight mainnet instead of confining that work to test environments.
