Midnight Details Nightmode for Private Cross-Chain DeFi
Built with Sig Network, Nightmode links private user balances with assets and applications on public blockchains. Its architecture keeps native assets on their originating networks.

Midnight published an official introduction to Nightmode on October 20, explaining how its privacy technology could support activity across public blockchain applications. The system maintains private balances on Midnight while coordinating transactions on external networks. The announcement names Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Tron as target ecosystems, with different stages of development and availability.
Nightmode Connects Native Assets With Shielded Balances
Under Midnight’s description, users deposit assets into a vault on the originating blockchain. Midnight records the deposit and updates a corresponding private balance within a Multi-Chain Shielded pool.
Applications use that balance to coordinate operations such as trading and lending. Transactions involving external protocols execute on their respective public networks.
For withdrawals, the corresponding balance on Midnight is burned to authorize the release of assets on the original chain.
Vault access relies on multiparty computation, or MPC. Midnight’s blog refers to seven private cryptographic signatures. Sig Network separately describes independent signers who cooperate to authorize transactions without any single signer possessing the complete key. The reviewed descriptions do not identify those operators or specify the required signing threshold.
Sig Network Connects Private Records With Public Markets
Sig Network supplies the signing infrastructure through which Midnight contracts can control accounts on Ethereum.
A contract checks a request and queues an authorized transaction. The signing network then produces the signature needed to execute an operation, such as a Uniswap swap or an Aave deposit.
Ethereum still exposes public transaction amounts and execution times. The private component protects internal ownership records and the allocation of funds among users behind the account’s activity.
Each application defines its participation requirements and disclosure permissions. This allows developers to combine private accounting with existing public markets while controlling which records authorized parties can access.

Ethereum Testing Precedes Nightmode Mainnet Deployment
Sig Network lists its Midnight-to-Ethereum integration as available on Stagenet, with examples covering deposits, Uniswap swaps, Aave deposits, and withdrawals.
Its roadmap ties deployment with real funds on Midnight mainnet to ledger v9, without a confirmed launch date. Tron expansion is targeted for December 2026. The reviewed roadmap does not establish operational availability for Bitcoin or Solana.
Costs span separate components. NIGHT generates DUST for processing on Midnight, while signing charges, external blockchain gas, and application privacy fees are accounted for separately.
Published contracts and a demonstration application give developers an Ethereum workflow to test today. Production deployment remains linked to ledger v9 rather than the October 20 introduction.
