Midgard Labs Takes Over Cardano Plutus Engineering on October 1
The existing Plutus team will continue working on the codebase as management moves from IO Labs to Midgard Labs. Intersect is coordinating the handover between the two organizations.

Midgard Labs will take over leadership of Plutus engineering on October 1. The transfer makes Plutus the fifth core Cardano engineering function assigned to a specialized team outside IO Labs.
The existing engineers will continue maintaining and extending the codebase, while IO Labs and Midgard Labs collaborate during the transition.
Plutus Moves Under Midgard Labs Leadership
Plutus executes and verifies Cardano smart contract rules when a transaction attempts to spend assets locked by a script. Programs created through different languages and frameworks ultimately compile into Plutus Core, the lower level language processed by the Cardano protocol.
Developers can build Plutus applications through Plinth, a Haskell environment based on PlutusTx, as well as community languages such as Aiken and Plutarch. Users do not interact directly with Plutus, but its rules control functions inside decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, NFT applications and other Cardano dApps handling ADA and native assets.
The transition changes who manages Plutus engineering without replacing the team currently responsible for its development. According to Input Output, engineering continuity will be preserved while management responsibility moves to Midgard Labs.
Earlier published transition plans identified VacuumLabs as a Plutus co-delivery partner and expected future steward. The new Input Output announcement supersedes that expectation by explicitly naming Midgard Labs and setting October 1 as the transfer date.
Midgard Labs Brings Plutus Development and Audit Experience
Midgard Labs has spent several years developing and auditing Plutus smart contracts across the Cardano ecosystem. Its security work includes audits for Liqwid, Minswap, SundaeSwap, FluidTokens and Genius Yield.
The company’s engineers have contributed directly to the Plinth codebase, Aiken and Plutarch tooling, open source libraries and multiple Cardano Improvement Proposals. Their work covers smart contract standards, data serialization, security and other components used across the Plutus development environment.
Midgard Labs CEO Philip DiSarro also helped bring Plutus tooling into Input Output’s Plutus Pioneer Program. The company is one of six organizations participating in Cardano’s High Assurance program, which focuses on verifying that smart contracts behave according to their specifications.
These contributions connect Midgard Labs with several layers of Plutus development, including contract audits, production applications, developer libraries and Cardano technical standards.
Plutus V4 Work Continues Ahead of Dijkstra
The Plutus team released version 1.68.0.0 on August 26, introducing the first Plutus V4 ledger API types ahead of the Dijkstra hard fork. The release also added a simpler Plinth installation process, faster constructor pattern matching and two new built-in functions, assetCount and multiIndexArray.
A parameter change coordinated through Intersect earlier in 2026 increased Plutus memory execution limits by a cumulative 25%. The expansion gave larger scripts more execution capacity, and Input Output said this optimization work will continue without interruption.
Midgard Labs joins four other specialist organizations responsible for core Cardano components. Se7en Labs maintains Daedalus, Teragone leads Mithril, ICAN Group handles platform engineering, quality assurance, cryptography, performance and tracing, while BlockPQR leads ledger development.
The organizational handover does not change Cardano mainnet rules, existing smart contracts or how applications use ADA. From October 1, responsibility for Plutus releases, execution improvements and preparations for Plutus V4 will sit with Midgard Labs under the transition coordinated through Intersect.
