Genius Yield Winds Down as Brünjes Introduces Withdrawal Tool

Genius Zero lets users access staking vaults and manage DEX orders without Genius Yield’s backend. Reward claims still require a co-signing service and depend on funds already available on-chain.

Cardano News - Genius Yield Winds Down as Brünjes Introduces Withdrawal Tool

Genius Yield is winding down operations, according to CTO Lars Brünjes, who has introduced an open-source application to help users access assets held in the Cardano protocol’s smart contracts.

Called Genius Zero, the browser-based tool supports staking withdrawals and decentralized exchange operations without relying on Genius Yield’s backend servers. Brünjes identified access to deposited assets and available rewards as his immediate priority, acknowledging users’ concerns as operations wind down.

Genius Zero Provides an Alternative Contract Interface

Genius Yield’s products span decentralized trading and yield management on Cardano. Genius Zero provides a separate interface for interacting with the protocol’s contracts, with transactions built directly in the user’s browser.

According to Brünjes, users can stake and unstake assets, as well as create, fill, and cancel DEX orders without a Genius Yield backend.

The application requires a compatible Cardano wallet and the user’s own Blockfrost API key. Blockfrost supplies blockchain data, so the current implementation retains an external infrastructure dependency.

Published under the MIT license, the code can be inspected, run locally, or used to deploy an independent version. The hosted Netlify application is a convenient access point rather than the only available deployment.

Principal Withdrawals and Rewards Have Different Requirements

Brünjes distinguishes between withdrawing deposited principal and claiming rewards. Unstaking principal does not depend on the co-signing service that he currently operates. Reward claims still require that service.

Claims are also limited to rewards whose funding has already been supplied on-chain. The application cannot resolve delays in funding outstanding distributions or make unfunded rewards available.

Existing DEX order-book fees continue to apply, with payments directed to a Genius Yield-controlled address. Changing those parameters requires signatures from three of the four original founders. Brünjes reported that the approvals needed to reduce the fees to zero have not been obtained.

The thread does not explain why those approvals remain unavailable or establish a timetable for changing the fees.

Testing, Wallet Guidance, and Remaining Dependencies

Brünjes reported personally testing unstaking and reward claims. He also documented a workaround involving Lace for users of multi-address Eternl v2 wallets, while acknowledging that additional edge cases may arise.

His security guidance warns users never to enter recovery phrases or private keys into websites or share them with anyone offering assistance. Reports submitted through the project’s GitHub issue tracker should likewise exclude private keys.

Genius Zero also includes support for Smart Liquidity Vaults and new Covered Options functionality. Brünjes describes those features as operating without protocol fees or a Genius Yield backend, although Cardano network fees still apply. Vaults using market-relative pricing additionally require a price-oracle service.

Users encountering problems can submit GitHub issues for investigation. For outstanding reward distributions, access remains conditional on both on-chain funding and the availability of the co-signing service Brünjes currently maintains.
