Cardano’s Peras protocol parameters have entered the ledger’s main development branch, Tweag confirmed in an October 6 update. The report covers work through October 3 and details progress in certificate handling and testnet infrastructure.
Ledger Integration for Faster Cardano Settlement
The initial parameter implementation was merged into the Cardano Ledger repository on September 28. The ledger enforces network rules and processes blockchain state, providing the software layer in which the new Peras parameters are represented.
Ouroboros Peras extends Cardano’s Praos consensus protocol with a voting layer. Certificates aggregate votes for blocks, giving a block additional weight in chain selection when it receives the required quorum. This reduces the probability of that block and its predecessors being rolled back.
The design aims to establish high confidence more quickly that a transaction will remain on the accepted chain. Exchanges, bridges, and other applications processing ADA could use those guarantees when deciding when to recognize a transfer. Peras remains a proposed upgrade under CIP-0140.
Peras Certificates Require Storage and Block Space
The team has finished an initial prototype for storing historical certificates. It supports adding validated certificates and retrieving records associated with a particular chain point. Cleanup is still needed before the prototype is ready for internal review.
Database tests are being developed alongside early work on a quarantine mechanism for incomplete or corrupted certificates. The latter’s design is still being aligned with research requirements.
Developers have also completed code that adjusts transaction selection when a block must include a Peras certificate. That implementation is under internal review. Certificates consume part of the block’s capacity, requiring the node to reserve space for consensus data alongside ADA and native asset transfers.
Cardano Testnet Integrates Node Monitoring
The local Peras testnet has gained support for cardano-tracer, which collects data from running nodes. The related monitoring change was merged into the Cardano Node repository on October 5, extending the testnet tooling described in Tweag’s report.
The report gives no mainnet activation date for Peras. A separate consensus change merged on October 1 temporarily disables Peras epoch context updates during block application. It keeps a new constraint linking voting round length and epoch length out of the next node release while the implementation is being completed.
When developers enable the new option, cardano-testnet starts the tracer and configures participating nodes to forward their data to it. Node monitoring is now part of launching the test environment.
