Cardano Hydra Raises Snapshot Limit to 4,000 Transactions
The development change targets transaction backlogs inside Hydra Heads, alongside fixes to fund settlement and withdrawal handling.

Updated:
Hydra developers have increased the maximum number of transactions per snapshot from 1,000 to 4,000. Merged on October 6 and highlighted in Essential Cardano’s October 16 report, the change reduced processing time by approximately 64% in a local burst-load test.
Larger Snapshots Reduce Processing Overhead
Hydra is Cardano’s Layer 2 scaling solution. Participants deposit ADA and other native assets into an off-chain channel called a Hydra Head, where transactions follow Cardano’s ledger rules and the resulting state can be settled on the main chain.
Participants jointly confirm the channel’s evolving state through snapshots, which remain within the Head.
The higher cap allows the leading node to propose more transactions in each snapshot round. Under heavy load, this reduces repeated processing of the pending backlog. At lighter loads, the previous limit generally does not constrain activity.
Local Test Records Faster Transaction Processing
A three-node benchmark processed 24,000 minimal self-transfer transactions in 13.50 seconds, compared with 37.04 seconds under the previous cap.
Effective throughput increased from 648 to 1,778 transactions per second, while median confirmation time fell from 29.1 to 12.3 seconds.
These figures measure the clearing of a transaction burst using simple transfers and local communication. Essential Cardano explicitly states that the results apply to that configuration rather than general network throughput.
The improvement concerns processing within a Hydra Head. The benchmark does not measure Cardano mainnet capacity.
Settlement Fixes and Release Status
The team also corrected a case where nodes could mistake a fanout transaction, which distributes a closed Head’s state back to Layer 1, for a deposit. Affected nodes could remain in the closed state even after the distribution had completed on-chain.
Additional changes preserve pending withdrawals in snapshot handling, keeping the settlement process consistent as ADA or other assets return to Cardano.
Hydra 2.4.1 remains the latest official release, with the higher cap currently in development code. Once included in a release, it will allow heavily loaded Heads to process larger transaction batches per snapshot while retaining the existing, separate limit on the Head’s UTXO set.
